Growing up, my sister and I rarely got along. She drove me crazy. I drove her crazy. We fought like cats and dogs which is pretty typical for sisters, but ask any of our friends or family members, and they’ll tell you we fought way more than most siblings. I’m not sure why to be honest, but it seemed as if we were always, always fighting. Then, as if somehow over night, everything changed. Everything. I guess we just grew up, and now, my sister is my favorite person in the whole wide world. She is my heart and soul, and she is absolutely, without a doubt, my best friend. As I grow older, I realize that sometimes even those we consider our best friends will eventually leave us behind, but a sister is a forever, built-in, friendship that should be cherished and fostered for all of the following reasons:
1. She was raised with you and grew up with the same things
Now, yes, we might have fought all the time when we were little, but there were definitely some cherished memories squeezed in there somewhere between all of the screaming and yelling, and it’s fun to reminisce and who better to do that with than someone who experienced it all alongside you.
2. She probably knows more about you than anybody else
You’re around each other so much that it’s almost impossible to hide your true colors from your sister. She was there the time you were up crying at 3:30am because you just got in a fight with your boyfriend and the time when you were stuck on the toilet all day because of how sick you were. She’s seen it all, and she still loves you.
3. She’s the only one who is going through the same family problems as you
This one is pretty self-explanatory. Your parents are her parents. Your cousins are her cousins. Your family drama is her family drama too, and it’s nice to be able to talk to someone who actually knows what’s going on.
4. She balances you
Chances are, your personalities might be very different, but in the big scheme of things, it all works out. You’re methodological. She’s creative. You’re reserved. She’s outgoing. You’re responsible. She’s spontaneous. When you put the two of you together, it’s perfect, and your differences are what make the dynamic of your friendship so interesting.
5. She loves you unconditionally
There is nothing you can do or say that will ever make her stop loving you. No questions about it. She loves you more and more everyday, and she’s never going to stop. You’ll always be able to count on her even when she’s mad. She truly loves you unconditionally.
The power of a strong sisterhood should never be underestimated. When you’ve got your sister by your side, it seems as if nothing can stop you. Sure, you’re going to butt heads every now and then, but in the end, your sister should always be your ‘best’ best friend. I sure know mine is. (:
